How long should peer review take?

Peer review typically takes 4-6 weeks. Sometimes the process takes longer due to an inability to secure a mandatory minimum number of reviewers in a timely fashion (a growing problem across medical journals as overtaxed reviewers are asked more frequently to review as a result of increases in the number of submissions) or because we have undertaken a more in-depth peer review – such as a statistical consultation.

Manuscript Central shows my manuscript is still awaiting reviewer selection several days after submission? Is everything ok?

Manuscript Central will show that the manuscript is still awaiting the selection of reviewers until the mandatory minimum number of reviewers has been reached. Reviewers may have already been invited and indeed sometimes a review is returned before a second or third reviewer has agreed to provide an evaluation.

Does the journal provide English-language editing?

Headache provides only a light copyedit. You must ensure your manuscript reaches the highest standards of English grammar and syntax. This may mean consulting a language-editing service or having your paper reviewed thoroughly by a native English speaker.

Does Headache provide statistical consultancy?

The journal may be in the position to provide some form of consultancy. Please contact the editorial office at journal@ahsnet.org

The manuscript I am about to upload has figures embedded in the Word document. Is this acceptable?

We will review manuscripts with images embedded within the Word document. Please understand that embedded images do not reproduce well in print or online. It is STRONGLY recommended, therefore, that you provide all images in original file formats such as TIF or JPEG files.

My line art has been scanned from another source (such as a presentation). Is this acceptable?

We STRONGLY recommend that you supply all line art in the original file formats. Scanned images are typically not of a sufficiently high resolution. If the image looks fuzzy at the point of submission, it will look worse once published.

Does the journal publish supplementary material online?

Yes – we publish large data sets online only. We also welcome movie file submissions. Movie files must be sent to the editorial office separate to your submission. All other material can be uploaded into the Manuscript Central system.

What forms do I need to complete for submission?

For submission you must download and complete a Reporting Checklist. These are provided for you as part of the submission process and can also be found at the journal homepage at www.headachejournal.org. These forms must be completed as fully as possible. It is understood that not all components of a particular checklist may be appropriate for you manuscript. You must note this on the form as “n/a” (not applicable). It is urged that you ensure that your manuscript does include the information requested on the checklist if possible. To aid the use of the checklist please include page numbers on your manuscript. You must upload the checklist as a separate file to accompany the main manuscript document. You should select the File Type Checklist otherwise the Manuscript Central system will not allow you to complete the submission process.

Do I need to complete a copyright transfer form at submission?

You can complete a copyright transfer form after submission. If your manuscript is rejected, we will remove the form from our files. If your manuscript is accepted for publication you MUST return a copyright transfer form along with an Author Declaration Form and, if applicable, a Color Charge Form. These forms will be provided with your final decision letter.

What rules apply regarding the completion of a revision?

You must provide a version of the revised manuscript with your changes tracked or highlighted. If changes are extensive please provide a ‘clean’ copy. You must also respond in point-by-point detail to ALL issues raised by the reviewers. These responses must be in the Author Response box within in Manuscript Central. Do not include the author response in the cover letter. It is also not acceptable to simply state that you “agree with all the points raised by the reviewers”. Again, you need to note your response to each point raised by the review team. It is expected you make a good faith effort to respond to all reviewer comments.

If Headache has a double-blinded peer review process, how should I provide a title page containing author information?

Please upload the title page as a separate Word document following the style suggested in the Submission Checklist. Should your manuscript be accepted for publication, this title page will be dispatched to the publisher, so please ensure it conforms to journal style and is accurate.

Can the Headache Editorial Office submit a manuscript on my behalf?

No – as the submission process asks from authors to guarantee the veracity of their submission, the Editorial Office cannot legally attest to these statements on your behalf.
